Although it is recognised that many disabled customers are able to travel without the need to make prior arrangements, it is advisable for customers with restricted mobility to check with their train operating company that all aspects of the stations and services they wish to use are free from obstruction prior to commencing their journey.  The recommendation is to contact the train operator 24 hours in advance of your journey.  (List of train operators and telephone numbers attached.)

National Rail Enquiries (NRES)

Information about train services, including delays caused by pre-programmed engineering works, may be obtained from National Rail Enquiries 08457 48 49 50 or text phone 0845 60 50 600.  You can also use the Train Tracker Text service.  Simply text “dep” followed by the station you wish to use and send to 48 49 50 to get real-time information for the next few departures from your station.

Texts cost 25p plus your normal network rate.  This service is not available on some mobile networks.  Visit www.nationalrail.co.uk for details on these networks.

Operators can also provide you with accessibility advice about the train service and stations you intend to use and, in some cases, may be able to advise you of more suitable alternatives.  Train operating companies work together to maintain a national database of station facilities which includes details on accessibility and you can find this information at: www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations.
